How black is your heart? To find out, answer these questions.
  1. Have you ever thought that the NZRFU was incompetent?
  2. Have you ever said anything bad about an All Black coach?
  3. Have you ever yelled out in public “bring back Buck!”?
  4. Have you ever looked at another person with lust i.e. the cheerleaders at the big game? (The Ref sees this the same as actually committing adultery)
  5. Have you ever stolen anything?
  6. Have you ever told a lie?
  7. Have you hated anyone before? (the Ref sees this the same as murder)
Like most people, you would have answered “yes” to most of those questions, confirming that your heart is indeed very black. By your own admission you have probably slagged off the NZRFU, the All Blacks Coach and made a fool of yourself by demanding that Buck Shelford returns to the game, even though he has been retired for over 10 years. But more importantly, if that wasn’t bad enough, by your own admission are a lying, thieving, murderous, adulterer at heart as well. The Bible warns us that it is appointed for a person to die once, and then comes judgement. On this day, God is going to judge you according to His perfect law, the ten commandments, and you’ve admitted you’ve broken some of them already - and we haven’t even gone through the other 6. In fact the Bible says if you’ve broken even one of the commandments, you might as well have broken them all. And like the Video Referee, God, sees everything. He sees your thoughts and the things you do in secret, He sees the attitudes of your heart, and the things you do when you think no one is looking. But God is looking, and recording the evidence. On that day of judgement, the Bible says you’d be found guilty of breaking the rules and heading for the sin bin. The Bible says that no liar, thief, blasphemer, murderer or adulterer can inherit eternal life, because you need to be 100% perfect to be able to enter heaven.

THE SIN BIN.
The Bible says that the wages of sin is death. So unfortunately for you and I, the punishment for breaking God’s rules, is not 10 minutes in the sin bin, it’s not even suspension for a few games. The punishment for sin is eternal death in hell, a place the Bible describes as a literal lake of fire. This should concern you, the thought that if you died tonight after the game you will go to hell forever. There are no exits in hell. Try and think about how long eternity is. Now think about how long eternity is if you are in constant pain, suffering and darkness. It should terrify you to think that at any moment you could loose your soul forever.

IT’S A GAME OF TWO HALVES. Luckily for you and me, life vs. eternity can be a game of two very different halves. At the moment the Bible says you are resident in the kingdom of darkness, a dead man walking and a slave to sin. You are a lifetime member and all seasons ticket holder destined for hell for all eternity. But God loves you so much, He doesn’t want that to happen. He wants you to play another game, for His coming Kingdom and to be rewarded life everlasting. God has made provision, as the Referee and Rule Maker, for your debt to His law to be paid in full, so you can be given a green card, complete forgiveness and admission into heaven when you die.

THE MAN OF THE MATCH. Jesus, the sinless and perfect Son of God paid actually paid for your death sentence Himself. Jesus was born to die instead of you, He took your red card. In other words, when He was killed on the Cross 2000 years ago, He was taking your punishment upon Himself. A substitutionary death; you broke God’s law, but Jesus Christ paid your fine in full. Three days later He rose from the grave, defeating death and proving He was God in the flesh and proving that everything He said was true. God is offering you mercy, forgiveness of sins and eternal life through the sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ. The alternative is for you to pay your own fine.

THE FREE GIFT. To be forgiven of all your sin, God is calling you to repent (turn away from all the things you know are wrong) and to trust in His Son for the rest of your life. To trust in Jesus is like putting on a parachute. You don’t just believe in a parachute to save you, you actually have to put it on. When you repent honestly and sincerely before God, acknowledging your sin and turning from it, and acknowledging His Son, Jesus Christ, as your Saviour, God will forgive you and grant you everlasting life. Death will no longer have a hold on you and your greatest enemy, the grave and hell, would have been defeated by Jesus on the Cross. Repent and be forgiven today, accept the free gift God is offering you. Then read your Bible daily and obey what it says. God will never let you down.
